Mechanical & HVAC Services for San Diego Museum of Art in California

UMEC VALUE DELIVERED

More effectively controlled environment for patron viewing; increased protection of a valuable and important art collection; non-disruptive installation; increased HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) control; lower operating costs.

HVAC SERVICES OBJECTIVES

To improve indoor air quality by upgrading its air conditioning and humidification control system.

MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

This HVAC installation project called for innovative mechanical construction management, since UMEC had to perform the work while visitors walked through the galleries viewing some of the museum’s most popular exhibitions. As a result, the company divided the work into three phases. For each phase, UMEC connected temporary HVAC ductwork to maintain the galleries’ temperature and humidity control for visitor comfort. When the phase was completed, the company shut down the temporary equipment and connected the new, permanent equipment.

Work began with demolition and removal of existing air handlers, chillers, ductwork and piping. The company then brought in new equipment piece by piece, assembled it in place and performed the mechanical systems start-up procedures. The result is a state-of-the-art electronically controlled heating and air conditioning system that monitors temperature and humidity, keeping them at appropriate levels to preserve the collection and ensure a continuously comfortable environment.
