CONSTRUCTION OBJECTIVES
To build a new, 30-story landmark convention center hotel on San Diego’s waterfront.
MECHANICAL DESIGN/ASSIST & HVAC SOLUTIONS
Working on a design/assist basis, University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors (UMEC) combined its HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) project experience with state-of-the-art technical expertise and extensive resources to deliver a wide range of mechanical construction services and solutions.
These services included installation of the hotel’s full array of HVAC equipment, consisting of three 845-ton water cooler chillers and three 845-ton cooling towers, as well as six chilled water pumps and three condenser water pumps. The commercial HVAC installation also involved two heating hot water (HHW) boilers that produce 6,800 BTU’s per hour and six HHW pumps.
To meet the facility’s kitchen and laundry needs, the company equipped the hotel with two 167-horsepower steam boilers. Other UMEC activities helped ensure consistent comfort throughout the building. For example, the company installed four-pipe vertical fan coil units in the hotel’s 1,190 guestrooms. And in the structure’s five-level podium base, the UMEC team put in 22 air-handling units capable of servicing more than 55,000 cubic feet per minute.
HOSPITALITY FACILITY BACKGROUND
The Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel rises 30 stories above the edge of San Diego Bay. It is adjacent to the city’s convention center and across the street from PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres. The hotel’s 25 stories of guestrooms were built atop a five-level podium base that houses ballrooms, meeting rooms, restaurants, a health club and other facilities.
